What is Interstitial Cystitis?
UrinaryBladder is a storage organ for urine which is
muscular and hollow in nature. It has a nature to expand until its full which
then signals the brain through the pelvic nerves to urinate. Interstitial
Cystitis is defined to be a chronic condition which will cause bladder
pressure, bladder pain and in many cases pelvic pain. Based on the cause it can
be a mild discomfort to severe pain. This disease is characterized under
spectrum of Painful bladder syndrome. In this case the signals of the urinary
bladder gets mixed up and the brain urges to urinate more frequently.
The Exact underlying cause of Interstitial Cystitis is not
known but the most common cause is the defect in the protective layering of the
bladder. A leaky epithelium will let the toxic substances in the urine to
irritate the bladder wall. Other contributing factors include autoimmune
diseases, heredity, Allergy or infections in the Urinary tract.
The signs and symptoms of Interstitial Cystitis vary from
person to person but the most common characters include:

- Pelvic Pain which includes pain in between vagina and anus
- Pain in the perineum in men
- Frequent Urge to urinate
- Pain and discomfort while urination
- Painful sexual intercourse
The most common risk factors associated with the onset of
Interstitial Cystitis include having fair and skin; it can even be associated
with chronic disorders such as pain, irritable bowel syndrome and fibromyalgia.
Women are more diagnosed with interstitial Cystitis than men. It is also
associated with the serious complications such as reduced bladder capacity,
lowering life quality, sexual intimacy and emotional troubles.
