Do You Know the Stages of Labor?

Though it takes nine months to develop a full-term baby, labor and delivery occurs in a matter of days and sometimes even within hours. The real labor begins only when the contractions become very regular along with the pain. Some of the few indications of labor include

Signs of labor:

·        Intensive high pressure in the uterus

·        Onset of differences in the energy levels

·        Mucus discharge along with the blood.

Stages of labor:

First Stage:

·        Early labor

This is usually the longest and minimum intense phase of labor. Early labor is also known as the latent phase of labor. This period comprises the thinning of the cervix and dilation of the cervix. It can prolong up to days, weeks, or can be for few hours.

·        Active labor

The following phase of the first stage of labor arises by the continuous dilation of the cervix. Contractions become much stronger and may include the symptoms of backache and bloody mucus discharge..

·        Transitional labor

This is the utmost intense phase of labor with a severe increase in contractions. They become much strong and occur for about two to three minutes.

Second Stage:

·        Delivery

During this stage, the cervix is completely dilated. Some women will feel the urge to push the baby out. The women can feel the rectal pressure when the baby is in the pelvis. Common symptoms during this stage include burning a stinging in the vagina.

Third stage:

·        Delivery of the placenta

The placenta will be delivered out after the baby was born. Mild contractions will separate the placenta from that of the uterine wall and move towards the vagina. Stitching to mend a tear or surgical cut (episiotomy) will happen after the placenta is delivered.

Pain Relief Treatments:

In the modern medicine there are many options for managing the pain and the resultant complications. Some of the mostly used medications include:

  • Narcotics like morphine, Merperidine, Fentanyl
  • Nitrous oxide
  • Epidural
